I am a bit sceptical about the method fixing *all* defects, but it looks like it might indeed boost overclockability and such.

The Super-powered Magnetic Wind Turbine

Sounds a bit too good to be true, but nice if it works. We’ll see. Especially “rare earth elements” sounds like bad for scaling.

Illuminating Solar Blinds Turn the Lights On

Simple but creative lighting system:

Inhabitat: Illuminating Solar Blinds Turn the Lights On.

If I understood it correctly, the blinds are covered with some solar panel like substrate on the outside and then lighting elements inside use the charged electricity to light up.

Security through obscurity fails on car keys this time

Most people with clue know that electronical security that relies on the algorithm being secret is weak. The less elements you have that have to be kept secret, the more secure system you have. And in case of security algorithms peer-reviewing really works – and there’s already lots of working methods available, so there’s no need to invent your own. Apparently this manufacturer didn’t have enough clue and wanted to have a trade secret algorithm that’s secret. And the results are in:

so-called side-channel attack on car keys (or building keys), which can be cloned from a distance of several 100 meters.

Based on the research, an attacker can reveal the secret key for the remote control in under an hour, and the manufacturer key of the corresponding receivers in less than a day.

"Eavesdropping on as little as two messages enables illegitimate parties to duplicate your key and to open your garage or unlock your car," says Paar. "With another malicious attack, a garage door or a car door can be remotely manipulated so that legitimate keys do not work any more. Thus, after the security of the building or car has been breached, the attacker can prevent you from future access."

Sonyn pomo: Wii on kallis niche-laite

Digitoday raportoi: Sonyn pomo: Wii on kallis niche-laite.

Esimerkiksi toukokuussa Wiin USA:n myynti oli 675 000 kappaletta ja PS3:n noin 209 000 kappaletta. Eli tällaisesta “niche-laitteesta” on kysymys.

Wii tosiaan siis maksaa puolet siitä kuin PS3 ja myy yli kolme kertaa enemmän. Kallis ja niché siis.

Goodness of a SLR

I have for some time been stretching the limits of what can be imaged with a compact camera, so when I managed to break my trusty Powershot A620, I decided it was time to upgrade. I ended up buying a Canon EOS 450d. I has faster burst speed than its cheaper sibling, 1000d, and it bests or equals the other sub-1000¤ SLRs in terms of high-ISO-value image quality and overall sharpness of the image. Because I often operate in challenging lighting conditions and print the results in A3+ size, these features are very useful to me.

Naturally SLRs kick compact cameras in large variety of areas, but my first impressions are these:

Damn it’s fast. Taking the 3-image set with -2, 0 and +2 EV takes no time whatsoever. Saving only RAW (not RAW+JPEG) the 450d can shoot around 6 shots with no delay whatsoever between the shots.

4EV range is not that much and getting more range is painful. I got used to the power of CHDK, with which I could shoot as many as 10 shots with up to 3EV between the shots (tho in case of compact camera I ended up using 1EV, more than that and I started losing details). And in images like this, even the 9EV range was not enough:

With 450d I have to shoot manually those series of three images, which with my lousy tripod means the images are not longer perfectly aligned. Which then adds lots of CPU cycles spent and some more manual work.

The extra resolution is very nice to have. The 450d has 14.4 megapixels and the actual resolution is almost as much. Which means I can get to my target resolution of 20MP with 4-6 times less (HDR) frames than with A620. Panoramic imaging requires some 50% overlap to each direction and compact camera could not capture actual resolution even up to the 7.1MP it had on sensor, so to get effective resolution of 20MP I often had to create a source image of 22..28MP and then scale down.

With 450d I can cover the 20MP of real resolution with 2-3 images, compared to 6 to 17 needed with A620. That makes my life a lot easier, and also makes it less likely the scene will change too much during the shooting. Having to shoot like 60 to 150 source images with camera that took couple of seconds per raw shot to save was a bit impractical.

A reduction by factor of 4-6 in frames to be shot is nothing to sneeze at.

Why 20MP is my target? It’s a compromise between print resolution and swap-factor. 20MP is just enough to cover A3+ sheet with 300dpi and anything more and processing speed will grind to halt. Apparently some internal indexes of Photoshop stop fitting to cache of my CPU between 22 and 25MP, or similar, because after that all operations take 10 times more time or more, even when there’s now swapping going on. So 20MP is it.

This image I edited at 28-29MP size and I can guarantee you it was painful:

But.. the results then are sweet. In the print I can see every single detail in almost every leave in the foreground. Lovely!

Ces 2008: Logitech Makes Grab at Sonos’ Audience with Squeezebox Duet

Logitech seems to have announced a device that’s exactly what we’ve been looking for: Ces 2008: Logitech Makes Grab at Sonos’ Audience with Squeezebox Duet.

Ie. media player device that does not need TV set as a display, that plays music from WLAN, supports Ogg Vorbis and FLAC. Very nice. If it had LAN connection, it would be perfect. WLANs are security trouble so I am not too enthusiastic about setting WLAN that gives access to our media server.

Now we just need it to come down 100-200 euros…

Intel nousee maihin SSD-markkinoille

Intel on päättänyt lähteä mukaan flash-tallennusmarkkinoille. The Tech Report:in arvion perusteella iso sininen tulee voimalla – jo mobiili-suuntautunut X25-M pesee pöytää kaikilla muilla SATA-tallennusratkaisuilla niin kauan kun lukeminen riittää.

Sony, Sony, will you never learn?

I was browsing USB keys on website of my favourite computer superstore while I ran into strange footnote in a product description (in finnish): “This product may contain rootkit technology that can expose you to security vulnerabilities.”

An an easily intrigued mind I went on to Google and found this on Engadget: Sony fesses up to another rootkit snafu

[Sony] says it has launched an investigation into the software, which was developed by a third-party, and will offer a fix by mid-September. – - – the rootkit is not as serious as the Sony BMX XCP DRM, but the software is still dangerous enough to allow malware authors to hide folders, so we’re glad Sony’s going to run clean up here.

Luckily Sony is cleaning up the mess here, but still.. Would they have cleaned it up if no one had noticed? Is there any piece of hardware from Sony you can trust?

I am speechless in front of this low ability to learn from ones mistakes.

Sony: Dust Voids PS3 Warranty

While PS3 sales are not looking any good, Sony customer service apparently think they should be even lower, as per their opinion, dust voids PS3 warranty.

From the said article:

I just got off the phone With PS3 customer support who kindly informed me that my PS3 is “too dusty” to be replaced under warranty. But won’t provide pictures unless they are subpoenaed.

That’s US legal system and Sony for you.

ButtUgly on popularity of Wii

ButtUgly: +5 Insightful on Wii

Brilliant pick, originally from Slashdot. I personally think 99% of the people who cannot understand why Wii is so popular have never played with one. If you have, it’s just damn obvious – not just more pipelines and polygons, but actually a simple device with lots of new and working ideas. The first time there’s a game console that’s not inferior to gaming PC, but complements it.

If you haven’t tried it yet, poke me on IRC and come here to do it.

PS3 ftl

Kompensoidakseen korkeampaa hintaa (euroopassa 599¤, USAssa $499)Sony tekee euro-PS3:sta huonomman.

Tämä varmasti lisää jo entuudestaan hieman vastatuulessa olevan pelikonsolin menekkiä.

Wii sen sijaan on yllättänyt positiivisesti. Ensimmäistä kertaa oikeasti harkitsen pelikonsolin hankkimista.. Wii on ensimmäinen näkemäni pelikonsoli vuosikausiin missä on oikeasti uusia ja tuoreita ideoita.
