Pekka Hyvärinen, Julkisen sanan neuvoston (JSN) puheenjohtaja, on useissa yhteyksissä osoittanut että hänellä on vaikeuksia suhtautua neutraalisti moderneihin medioihin tiedonvälityksessä.
Tämä kolumni kuitenkin tiivistää ehkä parhaiten sen miten pahasti hänellä heittää:
Käytin itsekin aikoinani Wikipediaa lähteenä, mutta huomasin toki sen salatut motiivit ja sisällölliset puutteet. Nykyään hankin tietoa enimmäkseen vakiintuneiden tiedotusvälineiden sivuilta.

Että niin. Ymmärrän että voi ikääntyvä ja uudistumiskyvytön journalisti voi pelätä duuninsa puolesta, mutta jospa nyt kuitenkin pidettäisiin foliohatut sylissä kun puhutaan oikeista asioista. Jos Wikipedia arveluttaa, voi vaikka perehtyä asiasta tehtyihin tutkimuksiin, kuten tähän. Vai onko BBC:kin Hyvärisen mielestä niin pelottava, että sen sanaan ei voi luottaa?

Gizmodo reports:
iPods really have killed music. People aren't just ignorant of high quality audio, they actually hate it. Gee, thanks for contributing to the downfall of civilization, Apple.
So.. According to Gizmodo, the main point in the music is the almost-but-not-really-hearable sounds in the music that are lost in compression. Right.
I, for one, have thought the main part in the music is melody, lyrics and sounds you can easily hear. So people preferring hearing the essentials of the music over the multi-layered web of expensive background choruses sounds very refreshing for me. Back to basics! It’s the riffs and hooks that make music good or bad, not the expensive producing.
This way or that way, people liking music without some of the finer nyances is something completely else than “killing the music”.

Most people with clue know that electronical security that relies on the algorithm being secret is weak. The less elements you have that have to be kept secret, the more secure system you have. And in case of security algorithms peer-reviewing really works – and there’s already lots of working methods available, so there’s no need to invent your own. Apparently this manufacturer didn’t have enough clue and wanted to have a trade secret algorithm that’s secret. And the results are in:
so-called side-channel attack on car keys (or building keys), which can be cloned from a distance of several 100 meters.
Based on the research, an attacker can reveal the secret key for the remote control in under an hour, and the manufacturer key of the corresponding receivers in less than a day.
"Eavesdropping on as little as two messages enables illegitimate parties to duplicate your key and to open your garage or unlock your car," says Paar. "With another malicious attack, a garage door or a car door can be remotely manipulated so that legitimate keys do not work any more. Thus, after the security of the building or car has been breached, the attacker can prevent you from future access."

Etenkin Yhdysvaltoja vaivaavaan pölytysongelmaan on löytynyt tieteellinen selitys:
hajumolekyylit kulkeutuvat puhtaassa ilmassa 1 000-1 200 metriä. Saastuneessa kaupunki-ilmassa taival lyhenee 200-300 metriin.

The Independent raportoi että pohjoisen pallonpuoliskon merien pohjassa saattaa olla enemmän metaania kuin maailman hiilivarannoissa on hiiltä yhteensä ja että nyt kun merenpohjan ikijää on sulamassa, tämä metaani on alkanut vapautua ilmakehään.
Metaanihan on siis n. 20 kertaa pahempi kasvihuonekaasu kuin hiilidioksidi, ja jään sulaminen on useastakin eri syystä eksponentiaalisesti kiihtynä tapahtuma; ensinnäkin jää heijastaa paremmin aurinkon säteilyä pois maasta kuin merivesi ja toisekseen, tuo vapautuva metaani heijastaa lämpösäteilyä takaisin maanpinnalle.
Tässä on siis.. aikamoinen haaste ihmiskunnalle. Jokainen nyt päästelty kasvihuonekaasulitra kun potentiaalisesti kertautuu eksponentiaalisesti joka vuosi.

What this means is that biofuel that actually makes economical and environmental sense is a tad closer now. The problem with crop based fuels, most touted this far, has been their low efficiency: it has taken more fuel to grow and distill them than the process has produced.
