Eyjafjallajökull and Katla: restless neighbours « The Volcanism Blog

There’s been a lot of mentions in the news about Katla always erupting when Eyjafjallajökull does, but no time frames have been mentioned. It was a bit challenging to dig it up, but here it is:

Eyjafjallajökull’s most recent eruption, December 1821 to January 1823, was followed by an eruption of Katla in June and July 1823

Eyjafjallajökull and Katla: restless neighbours « The Volcanism Blog.

The one before that was in 1600s and it’s a bit uncertain if both even erupted then, let alone knowing which one went first.

With these 1.5 data points it seems we might very well have some time to fly around right now.

The eruption of Katla is well past the schedule, however, so if not right now (meaning in year or two), it will happen soonish, unless something extraordinary happens. There’s record of Katla erupting from 900s to present and it has been erupting twice per century all these centuries, and now it’s already 92 years from the previous one (1918).

The cost of health care around the world Boing Boing

This is rather interesting. Not just the obvious US disparity, but also how Japan combines top-of-the-chart doctor visit count with low costs and very good results.

Mind Hacks: Dramatic sexuality changes after brain disturbance

These are damn interesting, and sometimes downright scary:

a man who was convicted of paedophilia late in life, but was later found to have a brain tumour, and on removal of the tumour his sudden interest in children disappeared. It reappeared again when the tumour once more began to grow

Why Do Chinese Save? Boys Want to Marry

I have long suspected the skewed sex ratio in some large asian countries will cause unpredicted sociological and economical consequences. This is one of them:

Across Chinese provinces, there is clear evidence that local savings rates tend to be higher in regions with more unbalanced sex ratios.

Wikipedia pelottaa

Gizmodo.. Earth calling!

Gizmodo reports:

iPods really have killed music. People aren't just ignorant of high quality audio, they actually hate it. Gee, thanks for contributing to the downfall of civilization, Apple.

So.. According to Gizmodo, the main point in the music is the almost-but-not-really-hearable sounds in the music that are lost in compression. Right.

I, for one, have thought the main part in the music is melody, lyrics and sounds you can easily hear. So people preferring hearing the essentials of the music over the multi-layered web of expensive background choruses sounds very refreshing for me. Back to basics! It’s the riffs and hooks that make music good or bad, not the expensive producing.

This way or that way, people liking music without some of the finer nyances is something completely else than “killing the music”.
