Sony, Sony, will you never learn?

I was browsing USB keys on website of my favourite computer superstore while I ran into strange footnote in a product description (in finnish): “This product may contain rootkit technology that can expose you to security vulnerabilities.”

An an easily intrigued mind I went on to Google and found this on Engadget: Sony fesses up to another rootkit snafu

[Sony] says it has launched an investigation into the software, which was developed by a third-party, and will offer a fix by mid-September. – - – the rootkit is not as serious as the Sony BMX XCP DRM, but the software is still dangerous enough to allow malware authors to hide folders, so we’re glad Sony’s going to run clean up here.

Luckily Sony is cleaning up the mess here, but still.. Would they have cleaned it up if no one had noticed? Is there any piece of hardware from Sony you can trust?

I am speechless in front of this low ability to learn from ones mistakes.
